Very Useful Information
Anyone planning to move to Spain and buy, rent or build a property, even if just as a holiday home, would be well advised to carry out some thorough research beforehand. Not that it's any worse than anywhere else in the EU, including the UK, but in Spain it is less well regulated. Worse still there is no law to protect you from yourself in Spain and you are expected to take care of your own best interests so make sure you do. We can help you with part of that at least by providing the best available information.
Everyone has heard horror stories about people who have bought a property in Spain but it needn't be like that if you take some simple precautions and don't fall for the sales pitch of people you hardly know - especially estate agents - who will regard you as stupid then fob you off with reassurances that all's well when it isn't. Similarly builders are deserving of suspicion so don't rush into anything without checking the facts and taking professional advice that you can understand.
We learnt about these things the hard way and although we didn't lose our investment, it would have been much easier and less expensive had we been properly informed and sought reliable advice from the start. It is most uncomfortable to feel 'out of control' because of language or lack of knowledge, especially when others seem to be making decisions on your behalf and not telling you about the implications of doing so. Don't make our mistakes when you don't have to...
